Thailand & Cambodia

Updated: Mar 8, 2020

November 2018

A little throw back here! I loved going back through all of our honeymoon plans & videos from Thailand & Cambodia to put this together. I have had so many inquiries about our trip which is actually what primarily inspired our blog!

We loved traveling to the other side of the world to experience a new culture and adventure together. Our journey included Bangkok, Phuket, Phi Phi Island, and Chiang Mai in Thailand and Siem Reap in Cambodia. I tried to plan for this trip as much as possible in advance, but found that aside from hotels, much of what we did could have been planned there. And in fact our itinerary was very fluid and changed every day. I recommend going with a list of things you want to do and try to clump them based on location. Allow yourself some extra days to spend more time doing the things you enjoy in particular. I also want to share some of our favorite places & experiences and give you some tips for best navigating Thailand!

Check out our other pages for our FULL itinerary & highlight video!

Bangkok, Thailand

The Best Eat

  • Sky Bar Bangkok: cool experience, great views, very expensive - famous from The Hangover 2 movie

  • Thipsamai for Pad Thai

  • Street food! Chinatown had the best. Don't be afraid to eat from the street vendors. All of our favorites were from street carts: Moo Ping (pork skewers), Kluay Tod (fried mini bananas), Poh Pia Tod (spring rolls), Moo Grob (crispy pork)

  • Mango Sticky Rice

  • Butterfly Pea Flower Tea

  • Rooftop Bar at sala rattanakosin: great views across the river at Wat Arun

  • River Dinner Cruise: very fun experience, great food & entertainment!

  • Caution - Thai food is very spicy!

Must Do, Must See

- Jim Thompson House: a Thai-style teak house built and designed by American entrepreneur Jim Thompson

- Thai Massage: get a different massage every day! Very affordable. Services include: foot massage, oil massage (similar to Swedish style), Thai massage (deep tissue acupressure with assisted yoga), Aloe Vera massage, etc. There are massage spas everywhere and most were clean, safe, and affordable. So Thai Spa was recommended to me by a friend for a more Westernized option

- Bangkok Art & Culture Center

- Temples: wear comfortable shoes that are easy to take on and off. You must remove your shoes before entering all temples

  • Wat Arun

  • Grand Palace: both men and women are expected to wear full length pants. Women must have shoulders covered - shawls are not acceptable - must be a t-shirt or cardigan

  • Wat Pho (Reclining Buddha): one of our favorites, impressively large monument

  • Loha Prasat: off the beaten path, very quiet and peaceful

  • Wat Saket (Golden Mount)

- Muay Thai: aka Thai boxing, very famous in the area, we however did not get a chance to attend an event

- Lumphini Park: walking distance from Central World mall

- Shopping:

  • Icon Siam: largest mall in SE Asia - an unbelievable experience!! First floor is based off traditional Thai markets, subsequent 6+ floors include apple store, BMW dealership, food court, Prada, and so much more! Of note, there was a free river shuttle from River City area when we were there - consider this when planning transportation

  • Siam Center

  • Central World

  • MBK Center: one of our go-to spots for negotiating deals

  • Chatuchak Weekend Market: (Open Saturday–Sunday from 9am to 6pm, Friday from 6pm to midnight) large market >8000 stalls, clothing/food/flowers/art, come ready to negotiate prices!

  • Flower Market: best to go at night, after 8pm, apparently best around 2-3am - we went with the night

  • Floating Market: Damnoen Saduak is the best known from the James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun, but as a result the most touristy - this is the one we ended up doing. It was a cool experience but very touristy, and expensive. Of note, it is also 100km to the West of Bangkok. I recommend looking into alternative options.

- Night food tour: this was recommended to us by a friend and we had a blast! We usually don't like guided tours however this was great and included a variety of foods from various locations including Thipsamai Pad Thai, night flower market, and Rooftop Bar at sala rattanakosin with tuk tuk ride included

- Madame Tussauds Museum & Sea Life Ocean World: We had some extra time in Bangkok and decided to add this to our adventures - bought a package deal to include admission to both wax museum & aquarium

Tips & Tricks

Transportation:

  • River taxi: we bought a day pass for the orange boat, we took it from Sathon Pier to Wat Arun

  • Sky train: easy to use - one way or day pass, we used it to get from Lebua hotel to Siam Center area

  • Tuk tuk: a very fun experience in Bangkok! Do it a few times, often overpriced, best for short distances

  • Metered taxi vs Grab: if you can get a taxi to run the meter and not just pay a flat fee for a trip, this is the best deal you will find in the city! However, most of the taxi drivers know its a steal and since you are a tourist, they will likely offer you an overpriced flat fee and argue with you when you ask to run the meter. A few drivers ran the meter but most refused - it became very frustrating and we even got out of a taxi while at a stop light because the driver wouldn't run the meter. We often used Grab (similar to Uber) instead of taxis - we found the rates were better, the drivers more friendly, and you can pay via credit card through the app instead of using cash for taxis

Places to Stay:

  • Royal Princess Larn Luang

  • Lebua tower hotel: from the Hangover 2 movie

Siem Reap, Cambodia

The Best Eats

Night market on Sivatha Road

Must Do, Must See

Angkor Wat - worth spending the money to get a tour guide! There are numerous sites and most of it can be done in one day. Wear comfortable shoes and be ready to do lots of walking. We did Angkor Wat, Bayon, and Ta Prohm (Jungle temple).

Tips & Tricks

  • Highly recommend staying at Cyclo D'Angkor Boutique Hotel! They picked us up from the airport and set us up with a tour guide for Angkor Wat. Also with beautiful rooftop pool/bar and spa. Great customer service!

  • We only spent one day/one night here and were very busy but got everything done that we wanted to do in Siem Reap - could've stretched this to 2-3 days.

Phuket, Thailand

Must Do, Must See

  • Scuba Dive: this is where we got certified! We did a two day course (with online instruction beforehand) with Phuket Dive Tours

  • Patong Beach - Jungceylon Shopping Center, walk Thanon Bangla at night (Tiger Nightclub)

  • Big Buddha

  • Tiger Kingdom

Tips & Tricks

  • Marriott Merlin Beach: great resort! private beach, huge beautiful pools, numerous restaurants & bars, good happy hours, would be great as an all-inclusive option

  • Phuket was somewhat overrated for us. It was busy, touristy, and dirty. We were told by many people to skip Phuket and spend more time on the smaller more remote islands. This is so true and wish we would've spent more time on Phi Phi Island.

  • The airport is in the northern part of Phuket and much of the beaches/resorts are more southern - we simply took a taxi but be prepared for this extra cost/time in transportation.

Phi Phi Island, Thailand

The Best Eats

Slinky Bar: drinks, music & fire jump-roping

Must Do, Must See

  • Monkey Beach: we rented kayaks and paddled to the monkey beach on the north side of the island. There is also a monkey beach on the south side - we visited this beach during a boat tour.

  • Kayak: we rented by the hour right on Loh Dalum Beach

  • Scuba Dive/Snorkel

  • Boat Tour: the wooden boats are a cool experience however for time sake, we chose to go on a speed boat. Our tour included Monkey Beach (south), Viking's Cave, Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, and Shark's Point

Tips & Tricks

  • Highly recommend PP Princess Resort: beachfront resort, pool, and bar/grill

  • The town is based on the isthmus of the island - harbor on south side and beach on north side - and all the streets are walking paths, there are no cars! Be prepared to walk or catch a boat to your hotel and carry your bags - we had large backpacks with all of our belongings which made this easy.

  • We caught the ferry to island and spent one night. So glad we didn't do a simple day trip tour on a boat - it would not have been enough!

Chiang Mai, Thailand

The Best Eats

The Night Bazaar: lots of street food carts, almost forms a food court, live music, lots to choose from! Try a little bit of everything!

Must Do, Must See

  • The Night Bazaar: very cool street market, huge! Get ready to negotiate/haggle! The market spreads down Changklan Road from Sridonchai Road to beyond Loi Kroh Road

  • Hilltribe tour: This tour is off the beaten path! You can customize with tour guide to fit your interests. We like food, culture, and outdoor adventures/hiking - so we went shopping at a local market, walked around a local village and saw how they live/farm/cook/etc, chopped bamboo down, hiked to a waterfall, and cooked over an open fire with bamboo tools. Awesome experience! You also have the opportunity to visit the village with the long-neck women, but this is a very touristy village.

  • Doi Suthep: Temple at the top of the mountain with great views overlooking the city. Climb 309 steps to the top where the temple's pagodas are. We had a driver take us up to the top of the mountain/base of the temple after previously taking us to Tiger Kingdom. {Hiking option: Monk Trail (3.9 miles out&back, moderate difficulty, heavily trafficked): if you chose to hike, follow the All Trails path - do not hike alongside the road. The road option is much longer and is not safe due to many cars traveling on a narrow, winding road}

  • ATV/Zipline/River Rafting: We booked a package through 8Adventures. ATV through village to riverside (muddy) along side elephants for 1 hour. Zipline was very safe, 31 platforms, long stretches over river with great views, some rappeling. River Rafting through class III & IV rapids, 10km stretch of the river, accompanied by guides in rafts with you and in kayaks along side you. Lunch included. Great experience!

  • Elephants: We did the full day elephant excursion with Blue Elephant Tours and couldn't recommend it more!! One of our favorite things we did in Thailand! The tour includes lunch and transportation to the Blue Tao Elephant Village where you learn about the beautiful creatures and how the local villagers take care of them all their lives. You make snacks for the elephants, feed them, walk with them in the jungle, and swim with them at a beautiful waterfall. 100% recommend!

  • Tiger Kingdom: We did a package that included a tiger cub, an enclosure with three large tigers, and lunch. We also opted for the photo package however if you go with someone, you can alternate taking pictures for each other. Learned a lot about tigers and the up-close encounters were unbelievable. Most of them were rescued from the wild for various injuries and have since spent too much time in captivity; they behaved like house pets. Still sad to see such majestic animals in cages, but glad we did it.

Tips & Tricks

Yaang Come Village Hotel: this was our absolute favorite hotel in Thailand! Great location-walking distance to Night Bazaar, very cute hotel with authentic vibe, breakfast included, beautiful jungle pool - recommended to us by friends. 100% recommend this hotel!

Our trip was a combination of enjoying the great outdoors, tourist destinations, and good food all while trying to absorb the cultures found in the various regions of these beautiful Southeast Asian countries. It was a dream celebrating our new marriage together here!
