Fredericksburg, TX

Texas hill country is wonderful y'all!! This fall we took a little three day trip to the quaint town of Fredericksburg to celebrate Tom's birthday. We were so surprised with how much we loved this area! The town has the cutest, most bustling little main street lined with cafes, shops, museums, wineries, and more. And if you follow Main Street down 290 you will come across over 40 wineries! Less than 30 minutes away, you can hike one of Texas' natural wonders at Enchanted Rock State Park. We thoroughly enjoyed our time hiking to our campsite and enjoying the great outdoors overnight! I hope to share some of the wonders from our trip with you and inspire you to take a weekend trip to Fredericksburg soon too!! We will definitely be going back!

Enchanted Rock State Park, TX

The Best Eats

**our favorite hiking/camping foods**

Trail mix

Beef jerky

Sandwiches

Granola bars

Tin foil dinners: I learned how to make these as a girl scout! Nothing fancy, just a burger patty, chopped potatoes, and baby carrots with salt and pepper wrapped in tin foil and sealed. Then placed directly on hot coals or over a fire to steam for ~15 minutes.

Must Do, Must See

Hike the summit trail to the top of enchanted rock

Carefully climb off the beaten path up the little rock - and catch the sunset here!

Hike into campsite with gear on your back and set up camp to stay over night

Explore the cave towards the back once you reach the top of the enchanted rock

Loop Trail

Turkey Pass Trail

Echo Canyon Trail

*I recommend using All Trails to look up distances, difficulty, and trail maps!

Tips & Tricks

Camping

If you are looking to camp, get online and look for a spot as early as possible - reservations are open 5 months in advance! The campsites book up quickly. Also, make sure you know what you're getting yourself into before you go. This was one of our favorite camping experiences, while also being one of our most difficult ones! You have to hike in completely which means you bring everything - clothes, tent, water, food, cooking gear, sleeping bags, etc - all in your backpack! We also brought hammocks which were very nice to lounge in and look up at the stars after a long day of hiking. There are some (very few) camping spots that are accessible from the parking lot and have access to potable water.

Save the Day Passes

If you plan on going only for a day, I 100% recommend getting a Save the Day Pass! These are available online 30 days in advance and go quickly for weekends & holidays. We arrived at 1:45pm and our pass check-in time was 2pm; luckily we landed as the fourth car in line at the front gate. This line grew to 20+ cars of which were let in one-by-one at 2pm to go into the park and check in at the front desk. We definitely recommend getting there early to get ahead of the traffic.

Tips & Tricks

Where to Stay

Definitely recommend somewhere within walking distance to main street. It was so nice walking around everywhere leisurely - this always makes us feel like were truly on vacation. We stayed at the Fredericksburg Inn which was perfect for us. This cute & affordable hotel was an old motel that has been renovated very nicely and includes a great outdoor area with pool & hot tub. If you're going with a group, I'd recommend looking into an AirBnB in the area!

Grape Creek Winery

A friend of ours who is apart of the Grape Creek Wine Club recommended this winery to us. We chose to do the taste & tour package which included a tasting of 6 different wines and a behind the scenes tour with an expert on how they make their wine. We learned so much and developed a much greater understanding of what goes into making a good wine and how different steps affect the taste. We loved their wines so much that we too joined the Wine Club! If you drink at least a bottle of wine per month, I definitely recommend checking this out.

Who knew such a lovely little town in Texas Hill Country could be packed so full of hiking, wine, history, good food, and so much fun! I hope these tips help you plan your next wonderful getaway to Fredericksburg!
